Thomas Morgan Jones
« on: Thursday 09 February 06 17:12 GMT (UK) »
Anybody know anything about Thomas Morgan Jones, a surgeon, from Loughor. He was the father of Jane Lewis, who married my great-grandfather in 1870, acknowledging his position on their marriage certificate even though, apparently, not married to her mother.
Scott, Dowdeswell (Merthyr Tydfil), Jones (Loughor and Merthyr Vale), Roberts (Nelson), Prichard (Collenna and Cefn Fforest); Evan Roberts (Corwen and Amlwch); Scott (Pentre); Scott (Ancrum); Thomas (Pantywaun and Bedlinog); Morgan Jones (Ystradfellte); Bowen (Loughor); Jenkins (Bridgend); Thomas Dowdeswell (b. Gloucester, 1829).

Great stuff, Arranroots - thanks a lot! It also ties in with an entry I found in the 1841 Census, which has Thomas (9) living in Loughor Lower Town with widowed mother Rebeca (35), and sisters Ann (15 - that's the clincher!), Catherine (10) and brother William (eight). No sign of John, though - if he was 11, I suppose he could have been away at some religious school...

I now know TMJ was the son of Morgan Jones, Dantwyn, Pontardulais, clearly something of a pillar of society, as he was the Llangyfelach representative on the Swansea Board of Guardians, a post in which, on retirement, he was succeeded by Thomas. Does anybody know if Dantwyn was a farm or an area? And what exactly was the function of the Board of Guardians?
    Thanks for any help forthcoming!

Hi Gareth

Try www.old-maps.co.uk for the place (my knowledge isn't local enough!)

The Board of Guardians oversaw the work of the Workhouse and made decisions about its everyday running, such as making allowances for paupers to be buried.
