RJF served with the Swansea Battalion (14th Welsh). I have written a history of that unit - 'Swansea Pals' published by Pen & Sword Books (2004). I would be interested in recieving any info you have on RJF and am happy to advise you on info I have.

Thanks for the response, Ronin. I have him on an original list of men who sailed for France in Dec 1915. It'll have his next of kin name and address too. Let me know if that is any use to you and I'll look him up. Have you looked at 'Soldiers Died in the Great War'? That will probably give place of birth and enlistment as well as date of death. If you give me his date of death (my casualty records are in the loft!) I can probably tell you what the Battalion was doing at the time.

No luck yet, but have found Margaret E Follard marries Josiah Jones apr qtr 1919 in Swansea vol 11a page 2565.

Also, cant find birth for Violet, but there is this for Edith V Follard  to mother maiden name Lewis apr qtr 1913 vol 11a page 2328.
(maybe this is Violet and she used her middle name?)
Cant find Sam though.

I cant for the life of me find a birth reg for Robert John Folland anywhere, have trawled every qtr from 1883 to 1896.
Can find none of your Follands in Wales or England 1901, have tried all sorts of spellings, even Holland as 91 looks like H not F.

What info does your cousin have regarding this family?

Below is the info I have:

Folland, Robert John. 29003, Pte.
Next of kin: Mrs Maggie Folland, wife, 26 Mysydd Terrace, Landore, Swansea.

Born Swansea. Enlisted Swansea.

Sailed for France December 1915.

Killed in action 12 July 1916.

This comes from a list of Swansea Battalion (14th Welsh) men who sailed for France in December 1915 and the 'Soldiers Died' records. On 10 July 1916 the 38th (Welsh) Division attacked Mametz Wood on the Somme.  Though the main engagement took place on the 10th fighting continued until the wood was finally captured on 12 July. The Swansea Bn had been withdrawn on 11 July but it is lilely that he was killed by artillery or maybe on a trip back up to the wood. Hard to say. Swansea Bn losses were 300 killed or wounded out of less than 700 that went into the attack.

Again if you have any extra info or photos I'd be pleased to see them!
