Scott Street, Canning Town
« on: Friday 10 February 06 12:16 GMT (UK) »
I am researching a WW1 soldier who lived in Scott Street, Canning Town. He died in Russia in 1919, does anyone if there is a war memorial in the area or if there was a local newspaper at the time that I could look for.

Thanks

IanC

Hello

Think Canning Town comes under Newham now, so perhaps get in touch with the local archives here http://www.newham.gov.uk/content/Leisure/archives_local_studies_library.jsp?g11n.enc=ISO-8859-1

You could try Channel 4s lost generation site http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/L/lostgeneration/search/person.html

It is not complete but worth a try.  Try for the name not the place.

Is he on the Commonwealth War Graves Commision Site http://www.cwgc.org/

I am not sure if 1919 would be included.

Hi Ian
I'm not sure a  WW1 War Memorial would have survived WW2 bombing. I know my Dad's street (Kerry St) disappeared off the map.
