I have just received a very nice and informative reply from Jenny Crawford following on from information initally gleaned from my Sussex Archive Web Site at.

It just shows how much information can be gleaned from archives on the other side of the world.

FULLICK Stephen, 18, labourer, Newick - 7yrs. Ref: QR/920 - 1846 Dec

"Hi Chris
One of the convicts transported from Lewes to VDL was a distant ancestor of mine.Stephen Fullick was sent to New Norfolk where,  a few days after his arrival in January 1849, he was found guilty of Larceny under £5 for which he had his Ticket of Leave revoked and was placed in chains.  The chains were not removed until October 1849.
On the 28th of April, 1849, there is a record of Stephen having been sent to Long Point, otherwise known as Point Lesueur, a convict probation station on Maria Island and from there to the probation station at Darlington. On his return to the mainland, Stephen spent time in various assignments, possibly seasonal farm work,  and during his time with Mr Olding of Prosser's Plains, he absconded with a fellow assignee, James Horne, an 18 year old convict from Islington in London who was transported on the China.
The detailed descriptions kept of convicts which were published in the Government Gazette when they absconded,  probably aided his early recapture, as no doubt did the payment of a £1 reward!  I am still trying to decipher some of the records but it looks as if Stephen received a sentence of Hard Labour at the Prison Barracks Hobart and a diet of Bread & Water. He was subsequently assigned  to Marsh Farm,  Mr Hopkinson, Glenarchy and Thomas Brooks, Glenarchy.  He finally received a Certificate of Freedom in 1853 when he, once again, disappeared into a black hole".

Hi Chris

My G/G grandfather James Knight was sentenced at Lewes Quarter sessions on 30/6/1834 for stealing a duck. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation to NSW. he was described as 21 years old farm laborer 5ft. 7& 1/2 in. tall, ruddy complexion, dark brown hair, eyes chestnut color, scars on left eye brow, large scar on back of left ear plus several tattoos  on his arm & wrist
James arrived in the Colony 18/11/1834 aboard the Hooghley. He was born in Hurstpierpoint in 1814 ch.3/7/1814. parents were Thomas Knight & Sarah Harmes & he was one of 12 children.
James had his way with an Aboriginal girl by the name of Diana Mudgee & a daughter Sarah Ann Knight was born 23/12/1839 at Mudgee NSW. (my G/grandmother). Three of his brothers & father Thomas followed him out here & they all worked for the famous Cox family at Mulgoa & Mudgee.

I am trying to find a copy of the transcript of his trial if at all possible your reference No. on 1066 is QR/823 July 1834  any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to complete my manuscript about Diana Mudgee's life for AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies) so that it can be put on the web.

Hi Brian

QR/823 July 1834 is the reference number of the paperwork at the East Sussex Record Office

East Sussex Record Office,
The Maltings,
Castle Precincts,
Lewes.
BN7 1YT

Tel: (01273) 482359 Fax: (01273) 482341

East Sussex Record Office "Handlist of Registers"

Usually a very good report of the trial appeared in the 'Sussex Express' of the period - films of the newspaper are also at the East Sussex Record Office.

Hope that helps
