Help with reading marriage witness
« on: Sunday 12 February 06 11:08 GMT (UK) »
Who is the first marriage witness on this cert?

I know who I want him to be... :-\ the question is what does the team think?

All and any suggestions welcome  :D

Looks a bit like CAZENS - the alteration doesn't help!

What is the date of the cert?  There are a couple of William COUSINS in the area...

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I wondered about CARENS too - am happy to be over-ruled LOL!

Not many of them about on censuses though...

The correction DOES seem to be quite curvy - as r or an n.

COUSINS is quite a common name in Glos, so it jumped to mind.

Hmmm - the case of the disappearing family???

This is 15th March 1851 - the census was taken on the 31st.

I have a William Cosens or Cozens Carter born c 1841 Brighton - he is with his grandparents Charles and Rebecca in 1851 and with his uncle Richard and aunt Harriott as in the marriage cert in 1861, after that I'm not sure although a William Cousens Carter dies in Lewes in 1888.

Mary Carter is missing from the 1851 she is Richards sister, both born Brighton.

Is the W somebody the William born 1841?  or could it be his father? I thought 10 might be a bit young for a marriage witness there were plenty of other family members who could have done the job.

:(  I don't have his parents, he just appears in 1851 with his grandparents as William C Carter grandson age 11 born Brighton.
1861 he appears as William Cozens Carter age 19 born Brighton as nephew to Richard.

Charles and Rebecca Carter appear in Lewes in 1841. From baptisms of children I can time their arrival in Lewes to between 1827 and 1833

There were two known daughters Mary c1821 and Frances c1822 both baptised in Brighton, one of these I'm sure was William C's mother..

I would ask for an 1841 Brighton lookup but it's not indexed so would need a great deal of work for someone to find either Mary or Frances.

I was hoping the W Cousens on the cert might turn up in 1851, the only likely candidates have nice tidy lives with nice tidy wives.

I'm stuck for ideas now..

The marriage is 15th March 1841. Was William born then.
I've got confuddled with the dates, how can he be 10 yrs if born the same year.
