Gordon family, Scotland->New Zealand c 1866
« on: Monday 13 February 06 15:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi

John (1822) + Jane (1817) and their children :

Janet (1842) + William (1844) + Helen (1846) + Jane (1848) + Margaret (1850) + John (1853) + Isabella (1858) + Mary Ann (1861) + Andrew (1865)

were last found @ Martloch, Banff (birth of Andrew)....then nothing till Isabella married @ Oamaru, NZ in 1882. Later documentiation showed she arrived in 1867, but in view of her age then it's unlikely she travelled alone.

Am assuming the entire family emigrated and am hoping they will appear on a passenger manifest/immigration listing.....

Would appreciate help/advice

Hi

Had already "trawled" through the passenger names of every ship travelling between Scotland and New Zealand in the period 1865 - 1870 on list.....

Hi Ysabeau,

I suggest you try the excellent Canterbury Museum (see the post 'Resources...' for contact details) to see if they can help. Lyttleton was a major port for immigration and it seems likely they arrived there or perhaps Port Chalmers: in which case contact the Otago Settlers Museum.

On-line ship passenger lists are incomplete though growing and the best method of finding your family will be using the research facilities of such museums.

Hi Ysabeau,

If you believe that the  family did infact spend some time in Oamaru, the North Otago Museum has some fantastic valuable resources, they hold most records for Oamaru and the surrounding areas of North Otago.  All  BDM  entries from the local newspaper The Oamaru Mail  are held  in the museum, they have been indexed but are not available on line. I'm sure they would be able to help you with your inquiry about Isabella.

email museum@waitaki.govt.nz.

Sorry had a look in the  "Reg of NZ immigrants of scottish birth arriving before 1921 in to Port Chalmers"   there is about 13 Gordons, but no dates match up and none from Banff...
