Hi Beryla,

Here is the family in 1891:-

1891 Census

Coppiceside, Church Gresley, Derbyshire

George Woodward - Head - md. - 56 - Engine Driver - b. Derbys., Gresley

Alice Woodward - w. - md. - 45 - b. Ports(?)mouth

George Woodward - s. - md. - 22 - Pipe Maker - b. Derbys., Hartshorne

Agnes A. Woodward - Daughter in law - md. - 19 - b. Derbys., Swadlincote

Lizzie Woodward - d. - unm. - 7 - Scholar - b. Derbys., Swadlincote

The reference is:  RG12 / 2198 / ED1 / f.11 / p.15

It appears that George's first wife Elizabeth must have died between 1881 and 1891 as he had remarried, to Alice, by the latter date.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Richard

Hi again Beryla,

Do you have the 1901 Census details for the Woodward family?  Just in case you don't, here they are:

1901 Census

67 Stanhope Road, Church Gresley, Derbyshire

Alice Maria Woodward - Head - Widow - 55 - b. Dorset, Poole

Gertrude Alice Lizzie Woodward - d. - 17 - b. Derbys., Swadlincote

Langley James Millington - Boarder - 26 - Watchmaker - b. Derbys., Wirksworth

Robert John Ross - Boarder - 26 - Printing Compositor - b. Scotland

Herbert Frank Lightfoot - Boarder - 22 - Manager Shoe Shop - b. Bedford

The reference is:  RG13 / 2638 / ED9 / f.150 / p.3

There were no entries as to marital status for any of the occupants except for Alice Maria Woodward.

Regards,

Richard

Hi Beryla,

Back again.

I have found George Woodward on the 1851 Census, but he was not with his parents (if still alive at that time), so no substantial additional information there apart from the names etc. of two brothers.  The entry is:

1851 Census

Church Gresley, Derbyshire

James Woodward - Head - md. - 23 - Brickmaker - b. Derbs., Gresley

Emma Woodward - w. - md. - 21 - b. Derbs., Linton

Charles Woodward - Brother - unm. - 19 - Painter - b. Derbs., Gresley

George Woodward - Brother - unm. - 16 - Brickmaker - b. Derbs., Gresley

Fanny Heap - Servant - unm. - 18 - House Servant - b. Derbs., Newhall

The reference is:  HO107 / 2011 / ED1a / f.463 / p.30

Regards,

Richard

Hello Richard

What a brilliant result. I can't believe that you've managed to find so much info.  Far more than I expected. It will fill in lots of gaps and so much detail too. They didn't move very far did they. Strange that George wasn't living with his parents in the  51, but I'm sure there was a very good reason.

Anyway thanks again for all you effort

Regards

Beryla

hi Beryla,

I have now found George Woodward with his parents in 1841 (as far back as I can go unfortunately).

This might give you a bit more to work with in your research:-

1841 Census

Church Gresley, Derbyshire

Thomas Woodward - 47 - Farmer - b. in county

Ann Woodward - 44 - b. in county

Thomas Woodward - 23 - b. in county

Maria Woodward - 17 - b. in county

James Woodward - 13 - b. in county

Valentine Woodward - 11 - b. in county

Charles Woodward - 9 - b. in county

George Woodward - 6 - b. in county

This information ties in with the 1851 Census details above where George was living with two of his brothers.

No birth places are recorded in the 1841 Census - only whether a person was born within the county of residence or not.

As you said - they didn't move far, did they!

I'll see if I can find George's parents now in 1851.

Richard

Hi again Beryla,

Just a bit more information.

It appears that both Thomas and Ann Woodward may have been dead by 1851 as I cannot find them on the census for that year.  That may explain why James and George were living with their elder brother in 1851.

I cannot find Maria either, but, as she would have been 27 by 1851, she had probably married.

Valentine was married and appears on the 1851 Census living in the household of his in-laws, John and Mary Thompson at Church Gresley, with his wife Elizabeth (nee Thompson) and 1 month old baby James.  He was a Brickmaker.

Thomas Woodward had married Ann(e) Peace at Church Gresley on 23rd September 1816.

The bmd index is now searchable, for free, at www.ancestry.co.uk if you wish to check out the deaths of Thomas and Ann Woodward.

Hope this fills in few gaps.
