GOODCHILD & Ipswich/Woodbridge Workhouses
« on: Tuesday 14 February 06 15:00 GMT (UK) »
is there any way of finding out when someone went into the workhouse?
SRO do not have the addmissions book.......
My ancester Hannah Goodchild gave birth to her son henry in Ipswich Union workhouse in aug 1852...........by 1861 henry is an orphan in the woodbridge union workhouse.(now Amberfield School)
i cannot find any trace of hannah after the 1851 census when she was living Forehamlet Ipswich withher father henry.
there is a listinf on freeBMD of a death of a Hannah goodchild June qtr 1852.....so this doesn't appear to make sense.....
i cannot find him 1871.(there is 1 in the army in kent)....but by 1881 henry is married and living in Ipswich

anybody any ides of where i can find out more information?

thanks for the info.
that sounds to be the right hannah....she was 17 on the 1851 census.and living Fore hamlet ...........is it possible that Free BMD have got the year of death wrong?
it then could have been after her death that Henry went into woodbridge workhouse..............

i'll do a bit more research or order death certificate.

Hi Margaret

I've checked the images for you.
FreeBMD is correct - there were two death registrations, one in 1852 and one in 1853.  The reference for the other is Jun 1853 Ipswich vol 4a page 407.

Cheers
Dave

Hi
As a 'newcomer' to rootschat, I picked up your interest in the Suffolk Goodchilds. My mother's maiden name was G. and the family roots are strong in the Ipswich area.

Does your interest span the descendants of Robert G. b c1716 who married Elizabeth Oldertin?

I have confirmed links to Robert Goodchild b. 1716 and died 1769. Married to Elizabeth Oldertin.

I haven't managed to go back beyond Robert yet.

Happy to help with info on Robert etc if required.
