Thank you for all your replies.  Let me clarify the position.  I am certainly not doing this "on a commission basis".  I was asked by my colleague if I would "do" her husband's family history and the arrangement is simply that he will pay the actual costs.  I do it because I love doing it and have no intention of charging.
I don't know the history of his first marriage, but obviously there are no good feelings, and he wants to end up with a family tree which doesn't show the first wife.  What I intend to do is produce two separate trees, of him and his second wife.  He won't get anything which combines the two and shows his children.  What he does with it then is up to him.  I agree with those who've said it isn't fair to the children (now in their early teens) to pretend their mother never existed.

I was just wondering what the outcome of your post is.

At the moment I'm "doing" the second wife's tree.  I use Legacy mainly, so they'll get separate "ancestors of" reports for each of them and separate trees.  I'm avoiding doing anything about producing a tree for his children.  I agree you have to do what you believe to be right, and there's no way I'm going to produce anything which tells lies.

Hi Suttontrust,

Frankly, I would tell him to get  ********d [choose your own verb].

This is his personal problem, not yours - and it is a pretty pathetic problem if he cannot even acknowledge the mother of his own children. Seeing her name in print?  :o

Shock, horror  :o :o

He is the pathetic problem, Ros.

You may like your colleague Suttontrust but you sure as heck, don't have to like her husband. Do her side of her tree then hand his back as blank pages with RAT written in black marker pen right across each page.

He might get the message, but I have my doubts.
Leave the 'man' to his anger and insecurity!!!
