Advice on a burial record.
« on: Monday 27 September 04 18:31 BST (UK) »
I think i've found one of my Baxendale ancestors on the NBI 2 but it does'nt list his age or the burial date just the year.  Would seeing the actual record tell me any more?

Updated
Having gone through the CD again, my Baxendale was buried in Beckett St Cemetery Leeds and there are alot like this, no ages or dates.

If the death is after 1837, then I would get the certificate.  You should get an age at death, place of death, the informant could be a relative, etc.  i.e. you will almost certainly get some more information that could help you decide if it is the right one or not.

Hi Fitty,

Leeds Library have the Monumental Inscriptions for Beckett St. Cemetery - you can email them at

localstudies@leedslearning.net

They will do free look-ups provided the search doesn't take more than 20 mins., after which there is a scale of charges.

Also, there is a website for Beckett St. Cemetery - sorry I don't have the address - which tells the story of the cemetery and how to find your way around it - Friends of Beckett St., or something like that.   I have been to the cemetery and it is in a state of total neglect and decay, but the Friends are trying to sort it all out.

Hi Jill.
I have the Leeds Burial CD which covers Beckett St Cem. That does'nt give the ages either so i would have to guess the age given the Census details i have ( which is patchy to say the least).  Even with the age i then have to have the GRO index to obtain a death cert.

any ideas?

He's not listed on Free BDM but he is listed on Yorkshire BDM but that does'nt give you the GRO Index

Hi Fitty,

I would certainly email Leeds Library - it is possible his age was given on his tombstone.   They also have the burial registers so it's worth asking them to take a look at those as well.

Hi Fitty,

This is a cheeky p.s. to my last post!   You couldn't have a look on that CD for Jowetts could you?   Lots of them were buried at Beckett St. I think.

Thanks.

It's me again Fitty!   I'm being a bit slow today (again!).   You do not need the GRO reference to get the certificate if your man is on Yorks.BMD - just click on the reference at the side of his name and that will bring up a form which you can print off to send to Leeds.
