John BALDOCK - Elizabeth THORP
« on: Friday 17 February 06 00:55 GMT (UK) »
JOHN  BALDOCK  b Sleaford  1775

I think he married Elizabeth THORP

Children    possibly  -
William  chr. 1807
GEORGE  chr.  1810  Sleaford
John & Elizabeth (twins)   chr. 1812
Henry  chr. 1816

John died 1859 aged 84.

Is there anyone out there who is researching this family or knows any details about  Elizabeth Thorp who married John Baldock/Boldock.
Sometimes the name was spelt Boldock
Thanks

Was this them in 1841?

620-18/3
Roxholm
John BALDOCK 60 farmer (NOT Lincs
Elizabeth 50
William 20
Sophia TUXFORD 15
plus servants.

1851

2100/287
Roxholm
John BALDOCK 76 Farmer of 180 acres emp 2 labs, Notts Little Cropwell
Elizabeth 59 Metheringham
Robert 42 Roxholm
plus servants

1861
Ruskington
Elizabeth BALDOCK (wid) 69 Gentlewoman, Metheringham

Was she the Elizabeth BALDOCK (75) buried at Ruskington 21 June 1866 ... John was buried there 1 March 1859 (84).

In view of the difference in age, I would be suspecting a second marriage for  John.   Indeed, Robert was the son of John and Ann, bap 14 Aug 1808 Leasingham and William son of John and Elizabeth, bap 4 Oct 1818, also at Leasingham.

Everything I've found seems to "hang together".

Where did you obtain the info on
1) John's birthplace
2) his wife's name
I can't see it on the IGI.

Hhi Geoff
This is what I have based my Baldock family theory on -
I  found George Baldock on the 1851 census living in Stoke Prior with his wife Fanny.
George Boldock  Head  age 50 Carpenter  born Sleaford
Fanny Boldock               age 45 born Wigston
Maried 1836 in New Sleaford.
I went to Leasingham Library and looked up Sleaford Church Records and found a christening for  George Baldock 4.5.1810   -  son of John and Elizabeth
Also a marriage for John Baldock and Elizabeth Thorp 1796.
I found several other children christened in the same church - children of John and Elizabeth.
William chr. 3.4.1807
Charles & Elizabeth - twins  chr. 8.10.1812
Henry chr. 22.4.1816     John  occupation - Innkeeper

I visited Ruskington cemetery where I found the headstone for John Baldock who died 26.Feb. 1859 - aged 84 years. Which means he was born 1775.
The 1851 census age of for John - 76 would be correct.
If Elizabeth was aged 59 she could not have married in 1796.
Where was George in 1841 - he was married to Fanny in 1836 but I do not have access to 1841 census.
Hope this will give you some background to my search.
Thanks Gay

George and his family certainly got around didn't they?  I'm afraid I couldn't find them in the southern half of Lincs in 1841.

I'm afraid I can't find a burial for his mother which would have enabled his father to marry the woman from Metheringham.  However most records on the NBI start at 1813 ... what if Elizabeth THORP died just before then and he swiftly married another Elizabeth to look after the kids?

Interestingly, in view of the fact that BALDOCK is not a particularly common name in Lincs, there was a BALDOCK couple (Wm and Elizabeth) producing children in Metheringham in the first decade of the 1800s ... but Wm was bap in Metheringham.

had a drive around Louth today to research Cuthbert links-there are several Baldock graves at http://beehive.thisislincolnshire.co.uk/default.asp?WCI=SiteHome&ID=6973&PageID=37264
(I only noticed because I used to live at a Baldock house in Kent and it rang some bells). There is an email address on the link-they may be able to provide details of the inscriptions

I read all this with interest as I have a John Baldock who was born in Nettleham about 1833.  His parents were Joseph (of Middle Rasen) & Mary Baldock nee Cranham of Cherry Willingham - I think) and the family seem to have been living and working at North Carlton Hall for most of their lives.

If Baldock is an unusal name for Lincolnshire, do these fit in with anyone else?

Hmmm ...

There is a marriage* for Joseph BALDOCK (son of William) to Mary CANHAM (dau of Joseph) at Potterhanworth in 1838 (no date) ... the 1841 census sees them at Potterhanworth

621-10/15
Joseph BALDOCK 20 AgLab
Mary 20
William 1
Joseph 5m
All born Lincs (Age 20 means 20-24years)

It looks like biglou's Joseph but there's no sign of clevergirl's John ???

* Marriage found in Lincoln spreadsheet available here-

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for that, definately looks like my Joseph.  I have also updated the place name Potterhanworth in my records to show it as one word.
