Tissington- family gone missing for 30 yrs...
« on: Friday 17 February 06 12:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Ive posted this on London board but I have a feeling this family are from Alfreton originally so i thought id post it on here too.
I would be guessing having looked at the Tissington name that it originates in or around Tissington in Derbyshire - iknow this village as im from sheffield. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Anyway: I am trying to trace a Tissington family but the trail has gone cold...
I was tracing an Elizabeth Tissington b1879 presumably in/around Poplar, London. I know who she married but am trying to trace her line back. I think iv got her in 1891 as Sissy...someone helped me on here to find that lol....but then i cant find any trace of the family in 81, 71 and 61.

Elizabeths dad was Henry Tissington and her mum was Ellen Driscoll. They married on Aug 6th 1876 in Poplar, London but it doesnt give their age....it says something like: f (a victorian style f) = age....but the two dashes are kinda diagonal......cant figure out what thats sposed to be? Any ideas? And then theres some more random squiggles under the Condition column.

Henry was a labourer in 1876 although on his daughters marriage certificate in 1899 he was a ships fireman...

Henry's dad was Thomas Tissington - an Iron Moulder.

I think iv found Thomas tissington in 1851. This Thomas that iv found is born in Alfreton Derbyshire - this is where the name seems to be most popular on the censuses - however, he has by 1851 moved to London - which my family did do at some point.

The above is what is definate..I have found a possible family in 1881 and 1861 - they could be mine but there's a couple of anomolies....The Tissington family iv found in 81 is from Alfreton - this obviously matches up with the family that im pretty sure is mine back in 1851 - so there seems to be a link there....

Here is what I have already:

1891 census
RG12/333   folio 78  page 29
1, Bickmore St., Poplar.

Henry Tissington  age 34    Ships Fireman   b  Poplar
Nelly  wife age 38                b    ditto
Sissy  dau  age 12               b    ditto
Harry   son   age 10             b     ditto
Nellie  dau   age 2                b    ditto
JOhn   son   age 2mths        b    ditto

Birth
Ellen  (Nellie ?)
June ¼  1889  Poplar  1c  658

1851 census
HO107/1555   folio  338  page 1
26 Randall St. St. Leonards,  Bromley

Thomas  Tissington  age 28   Iron Moulder  b Derby, Alfreston
Ellen  wife age 25   b   Poplar
Thomas  age 5   b  Poplar
Elizabeth  dau  age 6mths  b  Bromley

Can anyone shed any light on where this family got to?

Thanks very much
Alison

Hi,
Just wondered if this could be your Ellen Tissington, born abt 1826 Poplar, the Surname
has been transcribed as Tipington, however I think this should be Tissington, the enumerator has used  the old fashoned fs for ss, and these two letters have been transcribed as p.  Perhaps others will take a look and give their opinion, if you agree pleased post a correction for the name.

1861 Census RG9/300 Folio 94 Sch 11

Tipington  Elenor  Wife  Mar   34  (1827)     Poplar
"        Elizabeth    dau    -       10   (1851)   Bromley (this matches with 1851 Census)
"       William         son              6   (1855)         "
"       Henry           son              4   (1857)         "

There is no husband at this address, but he must be still alive because she does not describe herself as Head and states she is married.
Thomas born 1846 is also missing, and Henry is born 1857!

There is a Denery family listed in "See other family Members", this is an error and they
belong to another address on this Census, which I have submitted this for correction.

This is a long shot, will keep looking for Thomas.

Thanks so much!
Thats great - i didnt know about the fs for ss thingy either - that explains why it looks like that on a marriage cert infront of me then...
So it is double s then - it just looks like fs to us? is that right?

Maybe the name could have been mistranscribed elsewhere in later censuses too ...
thanks

Hi Alison,

When you think a name may have been transcribed incorrectly, search for just
the Christian name, birth year + 1 and place of birth, if no luck, take out place of birth,
it is very time consuming but often works. Did this with your family but this
is the only one I have been able to find.

Just for fun have a go at this, you learn quite a lot and it does help when you get further
back and look at actual source documents instead of transcriptions:-
