Kim,

in 1851 the 4 of them are with George and Lydia Baker and Caroline born 1826 is clearly marked as stepdaughter and unmarried. I believe she was the daughter of Lydia by a previous marriage and there was no husband.

From the IGI, Caroline Brooker baptised 19 Mar 1826 Limpsfield Surrey to William Brooker and Liddy

Let me know if you don't have the 1851 entry?

The children wouldn't have taken their father's name if the mother was unmarried - they would have taken her name.

In this case the children were almost certainly illegitimate. A quick search of the IGI at familysearch.org (which you can check for yourself) gives the following baptism - and the others may be there too but I didn't check.

Caroline Brooker baptised Croydon Saint John the Baptist 23 Feb 1850. Under parents name is only listed the mother Caroline Brooker, which is generally (though not always) a good indicator of illegitimacy.

Hope this helps, Heather

Hi Kimb

Caroline is given as unmarried in 1861 too, by which time Henry, William and Catherine have arrived.

Heather, take a look at her in 91. There, it's very definitely widow, yet her name is still Brooker. It's the same lady - the road is the same (Lambert Place) although the number's changed.

She seems to have died age 79.

Hadn't gone that far ahead Charles :) Indeed she seems to have described herself as widow in later years but the baptisms and 1841 census seem to indicate otherwise. That's just my opinion and I'm always happy to be proved wrong!

I think Kim will need to invest in a birth cert. for at least one of the children to get a definite answer?

Hi Heather

I think you're right about her being unmarried initially.

I'm just wondering if she married later. There was an 1884 marriage at Dorking between a James Wright and a Caroline Brooker. In the March qtr of 1891, a James Wright's death was registered at Croydon. He was 64.Maybe Caroline went straight back to her maiden name.
