1841, Gravesend, look-up please.
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 08:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for George Colegate born Gravesend, Kent on the 1841 census. On the 1891 his wife Hannah is a widow, there is no sign of him on the 1881, 1871 he is a 32 year old Police constable living in Cheshire. 1861, 23, police constable, lodging in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Can't be found on the 1851.
On the 1841 he should be 3ish.
He married Hannah in Chester 29 Dec 1864 and his Father is James, Occ Farmer.

Many thanks.

Paul.

Hi casalguidi,
Thanks for looking.

Since I posted that message I have found him, George Tracy Colegate, on Family search IGI as being born Ireland abt 1839 so perhaps he is in Ireland in 1841.

Do you know if Ireland had a census in 1841?

Still can't find him on the 1871 or 81.

Paul.

Hi Paul

I would be rather cautious about that IGI entry if it's the one that says "of Ireland" - particularly because he gives his birthplace as Gravesend on the census which he has been found.  It has been submitted by another researcher - I would imagine a relative of yours - perhaps they had some kind of family lore that links him to Ireland but nothing substantial ie. exact date/parents etc..  Perhaps he was just in Ireland at some time :-\

Have you tried looking for his baptism in the parish registers of Gravesend or other nearby parishes ............. http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bl/

If not, it might be a good idea to search a couple of years either way from his probable birth year and note any other COLEGATEs and TRACEYs ???
