Hepburn Farm
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 12:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
Does anyone know anything about Hepburn Farm, near Chillingham, Northumberland?
I've just received a death cert for my great grandmother and it states she died at Hepburn Farm in 1925. It also says her occupation was Housekeeper.
Would she of been a housekeeper at the farm or would the farm simply have been her dwellings, near to where she actually worked?
I've tried googling Hepburn farm, but didn't get much back.

Thanks for any info

jacdee,

It could have been either of your two options....

It could also have been that Hepburn Farm was name of a high grade house, at that time no longer associated with farming.

jacdee,

go browse around ( one of my favourite sites)
communities.northumberland.gov.uk
Click on "Chillingham"
From left hand side menu, choose "Plans", "Manuscripts" and "Ordnance Maps".

See the maps   staring with 1610.... andland valuations, and Militia Lists etc...

You will probably find more than me... but I see that That "H" place lies just over a mile south of Chillingham (it was regared as a "township" of Chillingham Parish... it has been called HEBBORN, HEBRON, HEBBURN, as well as Hepburn... there was a house/farm called H Bell Farm.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for that info.
I've tried that web address you gave me, but it doesn't seem to be working? Is it working for you?

Hi Jacdee.  I wonder if you are still around?  Browsing through the archives and came across your post from 2006 asking about Hepburn Farm, near Chillingham.  I am a Hepburn and the Hepburn township is the 'seat' of the worldwide Hepburn family.  I visited the area in 2014 and have a photograph of the farm, but sadly only from the rear - still a working farm.  It was certainly a very large house and grander than one would expect to find in rural farmhouse, but it was not the Hepburn's house.  That ruin is still standing, nearby, as a Grade 2 * Listed building.  I also have a photo of the adjacent Hepburn Farm cottages if you would like copies?
