GREEN family from Middlesex- help!
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 21:24 GMT (UK) »
I would guess that tracing my ancestors has been a lot easier for me than most- I have been fortunate that almost all had either a less common surnames, or lived in a small village/town. All that changed when I came up against the GREEN family who originated from Middlesex/Bucks! I would really appretiate some help: this is what I know:

1. My great grandmother Mary GREEN was born 1862; the first child of: Henry GREEN & Eliza JANES; her birth certificate showed they resided in Temple Fortune area of Hendon, Middlesex; and Henry was employed as a servant.
2. Not long after they moved to Billesdon, Leicestershire. However, Henry died just before the 1871 census, aged 38. The same census shows Eliza a widow, born Leighton Buzzard, Beds; living in Billesdon; with their children. Because I have'nt found Henry on a census, I do not know his place of birth.
3. Henry & Eliza's marraige certificate dated 29 Dec 1861 shows married in Bletchley, nr Milyon Keynes, Bucks; Henry's father shown as Thomas Green, employed coachman.
Henry is aged 28 and Eliza aged 26; both residing in Bletchley.

Whilst this information has enabled me to trace back the JANES family line, I am completely stuck on the GREEN line. I cannot find Henry or Thomas on the 1841/51/61 census that live together, so theres no way I can know if they are the right GREEN. Anyone any tips on where to look next!

Dear Arranroots;
I'm sorry-I knew I would forget to put some detail on! The marriage cert dated 29 Dec 1861 shows Henry aged 28 employed as a groom; and Eliza aged 26, employed as a straw plaiter; both residing in Bletchley.

Not to worry Hands - I had to stop last night anyway!

Do you have access to the 1871 census above?

Have you still to find the 1861 entry for the family?  That was why I asked about ages, There were too many to choose from.  Always a chance that they were living apart again too, which makes life tricky!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Dear Arranroots;
no- I have spent a lot of time searching through all the GREEN's on the 1851 and 1861 census for either Henry or Thomas, and cannot find any likely matches. The 'RG10' number you quoted- I take it there is a facility on Ancestry.com where I put in this ref number instead of a name?

Yes, if you have access to the 1871, put in the reference in the boxes below.  Don't put GREEN - that's the secret in this case!!  You will then be able to view the page.

Any problems get back to me - it was quite late when I wrote the ref down, so I hope I got it right!

Have a possible match for Henry alone in Leicestershire in 1861, but not sure how logical that is?  Still looking...

OK I went back to the 1871 and noticed a hitch - Mary's age.

She should have been born 1852, but this one is 1862 - what do you think?

1871 census                   RG10 ref as above

Eliza GREEN H Wid 35 - laundress - Leighton Buzzard Bedford
Mary A dau 8 - Hendon Middx
Sarah A dau 5 - Great Glen, Leicester
Thomas son 3 - Billesdon
Frank son 1 - ditto

Address: Billesdon, Leics

There are more GREENS next door, head of household William (54) a cattle dealer.
