1861 Glam lookup - Merthyr pls
« on: Wednesday 29 September 04 03:05 BST (UK) »
Trying desperately to locate the following family - they must exist somewhere in Glamorganshire!

David THOMAS (b?) miner (later to become a publican)
Elizabeth THOMAS (b?) (nee PHILLIPS)
Hannah THOMAS (9) (b July 1851 Hirwaun, Aberdare)*
Margaret THOMAS (b abt 1853 Hirwaun, Aberdare)

*Hannah's b/c states that her mother is the informant and lives in Hirwaun, Aberdare.  The b/c is in the registration district of Merthyr Tydfil.

Hannah helped at the Soar Chapel, Merthyr Tydfil (around 1870), so I am assuming that she (and maybe her family) probably lived nearby and thought it worth checking the 1861 Glam census for Merthyr.

Sorry for the poor info I have.  All help really, really appreciated!

David THOMAS (b?) miner (later to become a publican)

Do you know more information on David Thomas as a publican? He could be in the local trade directories in the Merthyr region . The local library should have these:
http://www.rhondda-cynon-taff.gov.uk/libraries/WHATWE.HTM

"Elizabeth THOMAS (nee PHILLIPS)"

Do you have David Thomas and Elizabeth Phillips marriage certificate? If so what ages and address does it give for them?

This link will help with records available regarding this region:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Aberdare/Hirwaun/

If I find anymore information for this region I will post to you

Regards Jen  :)

Jen

I know that David THOMAS was alive and a publican in 1873 as that is his occupation mentioned on his daughter's (Hannah THOMAS) marriage certificate.  She got married in Cardiff (where her husband, George BIRT lived).  Don't know why she wasn't married from home.

Unfortunately I have not been able to trace a marriage for David THOMAS and Elizabeth PHILLIPS so don't have any idea of their dates of birth.

Obviously its possible that Hannah (b 1851) might have been either the first or last child of their marriage which doesn't make looking for David and Elizabeth's marriage any easier.
