1851 Look up in Glasgow
« on: Monday 20 February 06 15:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi, hoping to come up trumps twice in one week  ;)

I am looking for
William Graham born about 1800
Wife Helen (Ellen) born about 1803

Helen i think was born in Ireland, as i found her in the 1861 census using her maiden name of Boyd.I am not sure about William`s birth as i cant seem to find him yet.
I know they had 3 daughters,Sarah,Bella and Rachel.

Anyone able to help?

Hi Carol,

Do you know if William & Helen's daughters were born in Glasgow and if so, where did you find their births?

Anne

Hi Anne, i know for certain Rachel was born in Glasgow as she is my gt,gt grandmother.I have her marriage certificate and it states she was 18 in 1872 and place of birth are on the 1891 census. ;)

Bella i am told was born in Glasgow but dont know the date.
Sarah was born in Maybole according to the 1861 census.

Hi Carol,

You should be able to find both (Isa)Bella and Sarah's births on Scotland's People (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) and then download their certificates.

If you find them, they will hopefully show the date of their parents marriage.

One thing that seems a bit strange though, if Rachel was 18 in 1872, her parents would be in their early fifties when she was born presuming your dates of birth for them are roughly correct. I usually take a stab at the parents being around 21 when their first child was born then do the old +/- 5 years.

Have you maybe missed a generation?

Anne

Hi Carol,   The family don't seem to appear to be in Glasgow for 1851 census.  I had a look at the 1861 index, Helen Boyd is listed as being 58 years old, I would say too old to have had another child, could Anne be right, in that you may have missed a generation?

Hi, i usually also go on the mother being about 20/21 when she has her first child.
The trouble is i dont know how many children this couple had in total. My family tended to have alot of children  ;)

I know i havent missed a generaton as i managed to get some of my information from my grandfather.
My great aunt was named after Helen.

I tried to find William and Helens marriage but had no luck.
It is possible i have made a mistake with the 1861 census, maybe the Helen i found wasnt her  :-[

Never seen a marriage date on a birth certificate, is this only on Scottish birth certificates?

Thank you both for trying to help out, looks like i will be stuck for a while longer.

Hi Carol,
You would only get parent's marriage date on birth certs. in year 1855 and from year 1861 to present day. (On a Scottish birth cert)
Did it say on Rachel's marriage cert. of 1872 if her parents were deceased and have you tried to find the family in 1871 census?
There is only one Rachel Graham born c1854 in 1861 census index for Glasgow.

Hi Liz, the marriage certificate says William was deceased.
As soon as i get paid i will try the 1871 census.

Had so little to go on i was spending a fortune and hubby was not best pleased  :-[

But pay day is next week so ....  ;D

Am assuming if the family stayed in Glasgow, then i must have the right family.
Just seemed logical that they wouldnt travel about without William around but i could be wrong.

Hi Carol,  Did you download 1861 census image from 'scotlandspeople'?
On the 1861 index the names above Helen Boyd are 'HANDYSIDE' and above them are 'BOYDS'  These families all seem related to one another.
There's a marriage in IGI for a Rachel Boyd married to a William Handyside.
William Handyside age 53 born Glasgow (he's living with the Boyds in Maybole 1841)
Rachel age 46 born Ireland
Sarah age 15 born Maybole
Helen age 12 born Maybole
Mary age 9 born Glasgow
Samuel age 6 born Glasgow
Christina age 1 born Glasgow

Then you have

John Boyd age 32 born Ireland
Christina age 34 born Glasgow
Mary Smith age 15 born Glasgow
James Smith age 13 born Glasgow
Sarah Boyd age 1 born Glasgow

If you go to 'freecen' they have the 1841 and 1851 census
for Maybole and most of the Boyds are there.
But there's still no sign of your Helen (Boyd) Graham in Maybole that I can see.
