My thanks to all who continue to contribute to this puzzle!

Liverpool Annie, your latest man is a surprise to me and I will need to investigate him further.

Manmack,

I've send off for a copy of his death cert (online) and expect to receive it any day now. I will post its findings.

thanks again

I've finally received the death cert from GRO.

Cause of death was 'Syncope due to shock of being operated upon for appendicitis, and general peritonitis for some days'.

In the Occupation column beneath his regiment details it states 'on war service in France'.

It also states that an inquest was held 29th August 1914.

So, the poor chap wasn't killed in action but was taken ill more or less immediately after landing in France and shipped back to Blighty for medical care.

Mystery solved. Thanks to everyone who helped.

regards, Leofric

Annie,

I don't know how to go about getting a coroner's report, and even if obtained, would it tell me anything worthwhile that isn't on the death cert?

regards
Leofric

Hi Leo!

There is a 70 year closure on Coroners' reports - so those for WW1 are available! There is every chance that yours has survived - and should be held at the County Record Office -  I would try an enquiry to the Kent office !
My friend recently looked at some for soldiers who died in Sussex during the war and they were full of fascinating detail - unfortunately the Sussex Coroner had totally illegible handwriting -  but well worth the search!

It was just a thought!

Annie  :)
