Found this when browsing through 1841 census:

Pudlers are men employd in the first process of making Iron, they bind boys to themselves.
Labourers in the Iron works have no regular occupation.
In the alkali works are the same -
Shinglers are employd at large hamers in beating iron
Furnacemen are employd in heating iron
Rollers are men employd in rolling iron for different purposes such as rails etc for rail ways
