Help to find Lydia Leah Newman born in Portsea 1878
« on: Wednesday 29 September 04 10:21 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out what happend to my Gt Gt Grandmother Lydia Leah Newman, she was born in Portsea in1878 but her mother Emma (maiden name New) died giving birth. Lydia's fathers name was Alfred Edmund Newman, he was a Waterman and his father was called Joseph Newman who was a Pilot at Landport.
I have searched all census available online but cannot find Lydia mentioned anywhere. If there is anyone out there that has access to parish records who can assist with any information your help would be most appreciated.

Hi,

I've looked at the 1891 online census and have found the following, although no Lydia there is an approximate age match.

Portsea, 3 Mialls Court
Alfred Newman, head, widower, 61, Waterman (licenced), Hants Portsmouth.
Rosa Newman, daughter, single, 16, laundress, Hants Portsmouth.

Is that any help?

Have you tried looking to see if she went to a member of her mothers family?

Hi,
While browsing the Internet up the local library the other day, I found 2 queries on RootsChat Extra, hope they are connected, if not please can you pass the info on ?

Q1 was a request for help finding Lydia Leah Newman
Q2 was a request for info on a Joseph Newman, a Pilot in Portsea.

Back in 1989, a couple of years after starting finding my tree, I made an error while purchasing a Marriage Certificate up St.Katherines House, London.
Details of this cert are as follows :
Marriage 28th August 1862 in Portsea Hants
Alfred Edmund Newman  31  Widower  Bartlett Buildings  Waterman  Father : Joseph ( Waterman)
Emma New                       22  Spinster  Bartlett Buildings                  Father : Richard (Fisherman)
Witness   (x) Rhoda Gale   &  W.?  Hatch

The following is not verified as relating to the above, but some details appear to match.
The IGI listings are from the 1988/1992 MicroFICHE, not the Family Search.
They are for Portsea unless otherwise shown.

IGI  Parents : Alfred Edmund  and Emma (n.New)  Newman
16/Aug/1863 Birth/Bpt.? Alfred Edmund.

With reference to the cert details showing Alfred Edmund being a Widower :
IGI 25/Dec/1854  Alfred Edmund Newman married Mary Ann Burgess.
You would need to check/purchase the Certificate of Marriage/Death for more info ?

For these IGI baptisms the parents are Joseph & Mary Ann  Newman  ( marriage not found )
2/Oct/1810   Mary Ann
31/Oct/1813   Charity Elizabeth
3/Sep/1815   Amelia Charity
8/Mar  or ?  15/May/1818   Joseph James
12/Dec/1821   Caroline Amelia
30/Jan/1825   Hannah Ellen Beale
25/Nov/1827   Elizabeth Lavinia
26/Oct/1830   Alfred Edmund

? Now, this following bit is pure supposition, but it may be worth a follow up ?
? 19/Apr/1801   a  Joseph Newman married a Nancy Burbridge
Hampshire Allegations for Marriage Licences
NEWMAN JOSEPH PORTSEA 21 BCH; SHIPWRIGHT   BURBIDGE NANCY PORTSEA 21 SP; PORTSEA 19 APRIL 1801
? The IGI showed 2 kids belonging to them :
? 2/Mar/1806   Joseph
? 4/Oct/1807   Ann
? It may be worth investigating whether Nancy died and Joseph re-married ? pure supposition ?
? Again - pure supposition - needs more checking :
? Could the Joseph above (born/bpt 2/Mar/1806) be the following :
? 26/Jan/1832  Joseph Newman married Kate Kemish  and the following kids
? 30/Jul/1837   Joseph
? 4/Sep/1842   Ann

In the 1851 census at Hants  Film 1658 Fol 863 are the following : ( only details known )
Joseph  Newman   45
Kate      Newman   38
Ann       Newman   10

Sincerely                    Mike Newman    ( a small cog in the Newman Name Society )
PS I would appreciate feed back if this has helped   ( I need the Brownie points !! )

Hi I've just had a look on freebmd for you. Lydia's birth record is on there, also Emma's death and a marriage for a Lydia Newman 1895 at Portsea.

Hope this helps
