HINES Family - Bushey
« on: Thursday 23 February 06 21:37 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace William Hines born abt, 1858,   left England  aged 12 years old for America ,   Lived in Springfield USA fought in the American civil war.    Returned to England in 1923 with his daughter to live back in Bushey,
I have a photo, of him with his daughter on his return wearing a five pointed star war medal,    plus a cutting from the Daily Mirror dated 1923.   he would of been about 65 years old then.   He was my Grandmothers uncle.

Hi Tweet,

I have found a Hines family in the 1851 census for Bushey viz ...

HO107.1714  F.136.  P.12.  Sparrow House, Bushey.
Martha Smith  Head  Widow  62  Char Woman  Rushton, Northants
Henry Hines  Son  M  38  Labourer  St.Albans, Herts
Martha Hines  M  35  Dagenham, Essex
Martha Hines Dau  10  Bushey, Herts
WILLIAM HINES   Son  8  Bushey Herts
Emma Hines Dau  5  Bushey Herts
Thomas Hines  Son  3  Bushey Herts

By 1861 William had moved on but the family entry reads

RG9/832   F.110.  P9/10.  Sparrow House, Clay Hill, Bushey
Henry Hines  Head  M  50  Farm Labourer  St.Albans, Herts
Martha Hines  Wife  M  45  Romford, Essex
Emma Hines Dau  15  Bushey Herts
Thomas Hines Son  13  Bushey Herts
Esther Hines  Dau  9  Bushey Herts

The IGI records the christening of William s/o Henry and Martha on 21 May 1843 at Bushey and also William George s/o William Hines and Mary Ann Fitzjohn on 24 March 1867 at Bushey.

Further probing will hopefully prove whether or not this is the family you are tracing but I thought you should have the information in the background whilst you make your enquiries.

Good luck with your enquiries.

Regards   ...   Peter

Hi Peter.  Thanks for that info,  I will look at that in detail later,    I have some more info, to put to the last post, My Grandmother Matilda or Mathilda Hines, married my G/Dad James Tullett in a double wedding with her sister Olive to a James Smith. at the parish church St James the Less,   I'm led to believe William was christened at the same church abt,1842/3.
Also he died in April 1920?? in Bushey aged 78??
When i can confirm all this i want to trace his USA Family.
Thanks for you time and trouble

Hi Tweet

I'm related to your family. Your William Hines father Henry Hines born St Albans is my 4 x gt grandfathers brother.  I have a little information on the family and the parents of Henry Hines who was christened 16 October 1811 in Abbey St Albans Hertfordshire if your interested in sharing.

Hi Jacky

You are welcome to what i have if it helps.   i have only got Grandmother Mathilda Hines ,  + her uncle William Hines ( yankee uncle as he was known as in the family )  i have a photo of him and his daughter when he come back to the UK in 1923.  + a paper clipping from the Mirror from 1923.
I am trying to build a picture up of him and his family in the USA and where he ended his day's.
I haven't managed to find out what the medal is on his pic,s but it's got to be connected to American civil war.    A medal of honor is a 5 pointed star but i haven't  found his name on the list.????

Hi Keith

Is the attached photos the same as the one you have?  This was sent to me from someone else who is researching the Hines family.

Do you have any idea as to what year William went to the States?  and with whom?  The reason I ask is my Henry Hine (Williams cousin) went to the States also with his wife Hannah in 1871.  They settled in Mississippi farming a 80 acre plot of land and didn't return to UK.

I believe he went to the states abt, 1858 aged 12 yrs, old.   they had an orange grove according to my cousin Jim.   Springfield, USA.
I have put another photo, in attachment of him and his daughter on his return.

Keith

Small world eh!

I have recently been concentrating on a generation back from your William and my Henry.  This is what I have so far:

William Hine and Maria Welton were married in Abbey church St Albans Herts on  30th May 1805.  They had 5 children :
Anne christened 20 April 1806 died 21 Jan 1811 "burnt by fire"
Thomas (my 3xgt) 10th April 1808 (son Henry went to US in 1871)
Henry (yours) 20 October 1811 (your William went to US)
Joseph 23 Jan 1814
Mary Ann 5th January 1817
All information from Abbey St Albans Parish Records

Maria (Welton) Hind died at the age of 40 in St Albans Abbey 9th April 1828
William Hines died St Stephens St Albans aged 50 24 August 1834

My contact for  the photo was Tony - would he be cousin also?

Regards

Jacky

Hello Keith and Jacki. Not sure if the two of you are still following this chain. My name is Tom and William is my GGGgrandfather. The chain goes like this, William Hines, Oliver Hines, Thomas Henry Hines, Dollie Marie Hines, to me. I have a fair amount of info on the family here in the US I would be glad to share.

Two questions I have never been able to answer are, what ship did he arrive on and how in the world did he end up in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois. I found no relatives listed, and in his Civil War pension affidavits, no mention of servitude. If either of you can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Tom
