military records
« on: Saturday 25 February 06 20:35 GMT (UK) »
hi all,
only me again,
trying to find info on my grandfathers military  history.
i know he was in the cameronians, scottish rifles, stationed in hamilton in the early 20's. the trouble is, i don.t know which battalion. as the cameronians became the seaforths, and other regiments, i am confused as to where to go for further information, i don'i know when he finished in the forces, but i think he rejoined for ww2. my father was in the same regiment, but unfortunately he died when i was young so i have nothing to go on from there,
 anyone got any ideas?

Hi Stephen,

Have you tried 'The Great War' Forum - http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?

I've had a lot of help from this site on my own ancestors.

Good Luck

Anne

Most military records are with the National Archives in London although I believe many of the WW 1 records were destroyed.

Re operation Wolf have a look at http://www.vojska.net/ww2/battles/wolf/default.asp  which details an operation with this codename involving action in the Adriatic region.
Unfortunately as codenames go, Wolf is pretty common, and it may have no bearing at all.

as the cameronians became the seaforths

I don't believe they did .... the Cameronians chose to disband the battallion rather than amalgamate with any other in 1968

see http://www.btinternet.com/~james.mckay/scotrifl.htm
http://www.btinternet.com/~james.mckay/scotrifl.htm

for more information about the regiment and its battle honours.

looks as though i was wrong about the cameronians joing the seaforths, maybe i got confused with the war reserve battalions, etc, rather than the regulars
