Cymmer Colliery Explosion 1856
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 14:42 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if there is a list of the names of those who lost their lives in this explosion on 15th July 1856?

According to what I have been able to find '114 of 160 workforce employed underground' were killed.

The death of 2 members of my family are registered on BMD as Sep qu. 1856, which would fit in exactly. I will be sending for the death certs but wondered if there was any memorial, list etc in existence or anywhere that I could write to.

Many thanks
Sue

here is a list of all people killed in coal mining accidents from 1850-59 it should include those killed at Cymmer.
Although there are plenty of references, none appear to have a specific list of casualties from this disaster.

Apparrently it was a firedamp explosion caused by a safety lamp.

Many thanks Dennford,

I have found all sorts of info about the mine, but as you say finding the specific names has been far from easy- but I've finally done it and completed a very productive weekend's searching!!!
