John KELLOW
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 20:29 GMT (UK) »
My gt gt gt grandfather John Kellow was born in Gwennap, Cornwall c1821.  He married Mary Ann Jenkins born c1822 from Marmon/Llandilo? South Wales.

Would like to find their marriage - have seen that they were according to their son John Thomas Kellow's birth cert.

I think that possibly his parents were Samson Kellow (Kelly) & Catherine but I have not found a way to prove this.

Any one any ideas?

Also, if the surname was Kelly then , did they migrate from Ireland to work in the tin mines?

On the Gwennap OPC site  ... http://gwennap-opc.tripod.com/marriages%201800.htm

there is a listing..

Samuel KELLY married Catherine MICHELL on 11 April 1807

which is probably where the member-submitted listing for Samson KELLOWE or KELLY to Catherine (same date) on the IGI is taken from.

What year was John and Mary-Ann's first child born? I mean what is a likely date for their marriage?

Kellow was apparently also a genuine Cornish surname, from 'kellyow' (groves).  The surname Kelly/Kelley might have also come from the same source:
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~kernow/names_k.htm

Of course, there then might be a seperate lot of Kellys who were Irish in origin.

1841 census of Gwennap, HO107/137/7 Folio: 56 Page: 2 (address: Stair Foot) has:
Mary Kellow, 40, widow (crossed out)
Elizabeth, 24, miner
John, 17, waggoner
Elisha, 15, copper miner
Ann, 14, miner
Eliza, 11, miner

(all b. Cornwall).

However, this John seems to be on the 1861 census in Gwennap m. to an Elizabeth, also in 1881 same.  Did your John move to Wales and marry there?

John & Mary Ann's first child was John Thomas Kellow, born in Blaina South Wales in 1846

There does seem to have been a few John Kellows born in Gwenapp around 1821!

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8965 - you can search the marriage indexes here, looking for John Kellows first and then trying to find a matching Mary Jenkins.  I can't see any obvious hits to start with in 1844/1845, though.

It makes me wonder if they ever did get married & she just adopted his surname!

Reading something yesterday that said that even though marriages have been registered since 1837 it wasn't fully enforced until 1882.

My second great grandfather is John Kellow born in 1821 with father Samspon Kellow.  He married Sophia Doney in 1847 in Liskeard Cornwall.  I have his marriage certificate which says he is a bachelor and his father is Sampson Kellow which I have attached.

The parents were Sampson Kellow and Catherine Michell (from LDS baptisms) married in 1807 in Gwennap.  Sampson Kellow appears as Samuel Kelly in  marriage certificate (and possibly as Sampson Kella at his birth in Mylor in 1873....still pondering this).

John and Sophia appear in 1851 and 1861 census in St Cleer.  After John died in 1864, Sophia and the children moved to Cramlington, Northumberland to be with her brother Richard and was there in 1871 census.  She then remarried James Phillips in 1874 and whole family emigrated to South  Australia aboard Duntrune in 1876.

I don't think that he can also have married Mary Ann Jenkins - but I could be wrong!

In 1851 John , Mary ,John Thomas and Margaret aged 10 months are living in Brynmaur, Llanelly, Breconshire. The registration district is Crickhowell.

There are also 2 letters next to John Thomas' POB ...can't make them out.
