Hi Sharon,

As far as I know the Richleys don't tie up with the Richardsons.  sorry, but good luck with the digging.

I have an Isobel Richardson in my tree (born c 1750) daughter of Matthew. She married a Wigham whose daughter married an Anderson and that is where my Tanfield connection starts in the 1770s. I haven't done any research up to now on Isobel, Matthew and their forebears, but thought I would mention this in case there is a link. Geoff and I have decided we have a link through a marriage between one of his Fenwicks and one of my Andersons, so it would be nice to find more links. It's wonderful to see so much interest generated in a little place like Tanfield.

I have links also

David Kirkup - Lintz Hall Farm - moved there about 1860s, via Gateshead and originating in Brough Cumberland.

Offspring married into the Hindhaughs and their offspring into the Armstrong x 2, Heron and a couple of others who looked as though they wandered in from Mackem Country.

Hi Pat,

I finally got around to looking for your Jane SMILES.

Sorry to say there is not a SMILES entry on the Tanfield transcriptions at all between 1747-1770.
I also checked on the Lanchester transcriptions but still no luck.
The IGI has a Jane SMILES born in 1766 at Ryton but I think she maybe too young for your Jane.

Hi Sharon,
What time frame are your RICHLEY family connected to Tanfield?
Transcripts I have are from 1719-1812.

Cheers
Geoff

geoff

thanks for the offer!  I have Robert Richley bn around 1855 to Jonathan and Catherine (nee brown) - a little later than your records I think. Jonathan was bn c1827 and Catherine in 1824.

Thanks anyway

Hi ~Geoff,

I have been looking back through my notes and find that I have a date for Jane Smiles birth as 1758 at Fryerside, Tanfield.  I wonder where she can have hidden.

I notice you said a while back that you wondered what the place was like now. If you follow Audrey's advice and look at 'tanfield-railway.co.uk' there are a couple of pics buried there, taken right at the Tanfield end of the existing preserved line. The background of them might give you an idea.
(Or ask 'Tommy', the site supervisor, if he has any local contacts working on the line.....  You might get a few extra pics if you ask him nicely! - but don't tell him I said so!)
