Any budding historians out there???
« on: Monday 27 February 06 10:58 GMT (UK) »
I have a bit of a historical question about Bridgend. My great grandparents, Morgans, either owned or ran the old Cross Keys Inn situated by the old bridge at the bottom of newcastle hill. I contacted a Historian from Bridgend who said that she would send me photos of it but never did. The Inn was Demolished in roughly 1964. I can find no reference to it on the net except for a vague description on wales at heart. It was one of three pubs there, the lamb and flag and the Angel( now p.s. to those from Bridgend).
I just wondered if anybody knew how i could find who owned it or if there are any pictures of it that i have been unable to find. I believe my family were there just after 1900 and i have photos of them but not at the Inn.
Thanks to anyone able to help!!

You could try the local Libraries

Bridgend Library

http://www.bridgend.gov.uk/Web1/groups/public/documents/services/001884.hcsp

Swansea Library

http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=467

Both have email addresses, and Swansea has Ask-a-librarian.

Thanks for the links. I am in Scotland for a few months so its hard for me to get to Bridgend Library so my uncle is going for me on the weekend. Maybe a local library from here could order a book for me from there.

Have you tried contacting the owner of this site?

http://opobs.co.uk/index.html

They have this postcard of the Cross?

http://opobs.co.uk/mainsite/Frames/Frame10.html

There are what looks like 2 pubs on the corner there at the foot of a hill? :)

Thanks a lot for the link. I found the postcard i think you meant. The cross keys was literally just over the bridge on what is now a patch of grass. The postcard shows the back of a building which i think may be it!
 ;D ;D ;D
Thanks again

I'm not sure that I'm going to be much help but my mother was born opposite the Cross keys. The first family she can remember living there were the Stockwoods. This would have been in the late 1920s.

She can't remember any Morgan family
