Help, I am stuck

This board has offered me a lot of assistance with lookups.  I now need help with where to go next.

One branch of my family is slipping away from me,  I have spoken to the eldest living members of my family with no luck, other than waiting until 1912 can i find out any more about a family member.

What I know?

Name:  Mary Ann Jordan

Born around 1881/1882

Died June 1942 aged 60.

Married Nov 1912 aged 30.



From the family that remember her all I have gleaned is that she was a nasty woman..  And I know where she is buried unfortunately no grave..  (only know the location from my dad going with his dad).

Not of lot of help and there are multiple reference's in the 1901 census. 

Is there a line of enquiry i am overlooking.

There are a number of things you don't say.

Do you know what relationship this woman is to your family?  And hence perhaps the names of parents or siblings?

Was JORDAN her maiden name & who did she marry?

You can search the GRO indexes free at www.ancestry.co.uk

This would enable you to order certificates that would give you further leads.

Sorry this is my g-grand-mother when she married there was no fathers name on the certificate.

We have very little information on her except as above.

She was married a spinster so this was her maiden name.

As Mishka says, some idea of location would help. There are 6 Mary Ann's marrying in 1912, though only one in Q4. Two of the 6 have matching Mary Ann's born in 1881/2 (Sheffield and Woolwich) but neither of these is the Mary Ann marrying in Q4.

Any further bits of information you can provide might just be the key.

Okay all I have on her.

She died Mary Ann North 29 June 1942 aged 60 (address 8 City Road, Beeston).

She married Freeman North on the 13th November 1912 a spinster (Fathers Name just shows a line, Address Listed as the Charlton Arms, Chilwell)

She had a daughter Hilda Jordan on 24 June 1907 (Address 53 Milton Street, Long Eaton)

She had a son William Jordan on 14 Dec 1909 (Address 53 Hamilton Road, Long Eaton)


Everything points to her being local, however of the Mary Anns I have looked up on the 1901 I cannot say any of them are definately her.

I would not rule out a previous marriage, despite the cert saying she is a spinster. (My "bachelor" rellie was actually a widower whose baby daughter had died).

Did Mary Ann register her children's births herself? Is there no father listed on them?

Who were the witnesses on the marriage cert? Where did the marriage take place?  How old was MA at the time?

Do you have Freeman NORTH in 1901 - the one I found in Chilwell is already 31 years of age (b 1870), does this match with the ages on the marriage cert?

There might just be further clues that will help!

You have found the correct Freeman North i believe the only one listed in 1901.

She registered both births herself but just a line through fathers name.

The witnessed were William and Mary Fearn at the wedding.

Seems I will have to wait until 1912 for more information.
