At risk of stating the obvious and perhaps neither would be fruitful but have you checked the burial register and grave register just to make sure there isn't any other clue lurking there?

What about an obituary in the local newspaper?

I have not progressed any further with this and am trying to trace forward some distant cousins with the NORTH surname.  Their son Joseph North had a daughter but we dont know who she married just that shes lives in Beeston, Nottingham still.

Hiya :)

If Mary Ann was born illegitimate, it's quite possible that her mother married sometime after the birth. If so, Mary Ann may be hiding on a census under her mother's married name.

For that reason you really need that birth certificate so that you can trace who her mother was, and what happened to her.
