HI A

You could be right about that. They did get married in the registry office (sorry, didn't put that in above post did I?  ::)). His dad wasn't the signing registrar, it's a Watson Harrison, deputy registrar, but seeing as Hubert is a clerk he probably worked with his dad and got called in from an outer office if they were a witness short, makes sense.

I've searched on IGI but I think it's too modern for on there, didn't find anything at this stage. I was just looking at freebmd to see if there was maybe a child before my granma born, (much) nearer to the wedding date! But there are problems on the site so I haven't managed it yet. I'll also look on the index pages to see if I can find anything else.

I wonder whether the groom was a bachelor when he married?

I found a likely looking chap on the censuses, from North Ormesby (father iron worker, name of James, mother Annie) but both Jameses were married in 1901.  Suppose they might have died in the interim.

Remember that the addresses on the marriage cert were often just a lodging place the night before for one or more of the parties.

Good luck with the sibling search

;)

Hi A

Yes, it says bachelor on the certificate. Would it say something different if he'd been divorced or widowed? I've only seen a few certificates so far, mine and my mum's! before I started this 'hobby'.

I did find a Sarah Ann Redmond born in Rotherham 1902, Dec quarter  :o  Seems to fit with having both her and her mum's names don't you think? I suppose the only way to get the parents' names is to get a certificate is it?

I haven't done any research after the 1901 census yet really so not sure what I can and can't do for the early 1900's yet - any suggestions?

Geez, if this girl is theirs they were cutting it a bit close getting married in August weren't they?

Thanks for all your help A, guess you're off to bed now, saw your goodnight on the other thread - I'm off to get some lunch!
