One possible link, when searching the NA catalogue:

William Collins, b. 'Pinryn' (probably PENRYN) Cornwall, served 1820-1827 in the 4th Foot Regiment, discharged aged 35.  During the 1820-1827 period they were in England, the West Indies, and Portugal.

That would make him about the right age to be the father of your William.  Note that Penryn is in St. Gluvias which adjoins Stithians.  The William s. o. William and Ann you mention is with his family in Wendron in 1841:

HO107/139/6 (folio 9 page 10)
Menorlue
Ann Collins, 40
William, 20
Jane, 15 (chrs. 1822)
John, 15 (chrs. 1824)
James, 10 (chrs. 1829)
Ann, 8 (?)
Martha, 6 (chrs 1833)
Henry, 5
Francis, 3
Elizabeth, 2

Thanks heaps this could be the missing link, I checked the 1851 Census but that family had moved from Menorlue/Menlerlue. There were three other family of Collin's listed at Menorlue in 1841 & 1851 must be related?

Where did you find out all that info. about William Collins the soldier, great stuff!

Brian

Hi Brian,
Sounds like you might have found your man in NSW, but in case you wanted to check Victoria, the PROV is the Public Record Office of Victoria, their records for immigration are linked via this guide:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/065/
(using the awesome new shrinky-dinky-linky tool - thanks Trystan!)

The army stuff was from the NA catalogue at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk  You could try looking at the indexes for army births/baptisms which are online at 1837online.com, these indexes include regiment of father.
