I don't think that we can judge our ancestors by today's morals and ethics.

That's lucky.  I  have discovered this week, via The Times' digital archive, that my g-g-g'father (a banker and American gold-rush speculator) committed a million-pound Anglo-American swindle in the 1890s.  I guess that explains why he spent the rest of his life in South America...
