Thomas Cadogan - Abergavenny
« on: Thursday 02 March 06 19:23 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help find Thomas Cadogan prior to the 1881 England census.  There it shows him as being either 30 or 39 (can't read it!) living in Whitfield Street, Marylebone with his wife Emma and their four children.  He is listed as a boat maker born in Abergavenny.

I can't find any trace of him on either the England or Wales census prior to that.  If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks
Tracy

I wonder if he is the Thomas DUGGAN in the Cambridge barracks, Portsea Island in 1871?

RG10/1136/93/39

He is aged 20, a Private and born Abergavenny.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

This looks a likely marriage?

Marriage

1873 Sep

Thomas CADOGAN

Emma Louisa FRITCHLEY

Marylebone  vol 1a  page  858

So he must have been in Marylebone for that - maybe earlier?

Hi - I just found the same one as Kate & I would vote for your Thomas in 1881 being a boot maker (aka cordwainer) rather than boat maker.

doesn't fit my 1871 offering though

The marriage cert might help establish his occupation & father's name.

You might be right with your 1871 look up Arranroots as I cannot find a Thomas to fit, one born in Radnorshire visiting a Duggan family in Abergavenny, but thats it. Maybe he fancied a career change!

I am having trouble keeping up with you both you have been so fast - it has taken me several days to get precisely nowhere!!  The boat maker/boot maker thing would fit though - I did wonder about a boat maker from Wales working in Marylebone :)

How did you come up with Duggan as an option?  Do you think that means the real family name was actual Duggan and morphed into Cadogan somehow along the way?

Regards
Tracy
ps  You obviously earned all those stars under your names!!
