DUGGAN and CADOGAN are Welsh names - I have DUGGAN in my tree!

Also spelt CADWGAN on occasion.  And pronounced "Guh" at the beginning!!

 ;D

Modified:

Cadogan

(origin: Welsh.) Terrible in battle; from cad, battle, and gwg, fierce.

I think the DUGGAN thing is very tentative.

I would be inclined to invest in at least one cert - the marriage for preference - to give you some facts to work from.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi
Not sure what I am doing wrong, keep replying and hitting post and some of them are not getting through!

I'll try again - Emma is the right one; she and Thomas were my gg grandparents.  Someone on the London board helped me find her, as I could only see her on the 1861 census.  The marriage you found is also the right one.  Sarah is her aunt although we obviously can't see what happened to her real parents, she lived with her grandmother, Hannah, and Sarah and after Hannah died she carried on living with Sarah until she was married.

I think you are both right with the Duggan suggestion and the boot maker rather than boat maker.  I had wondered about a Welsh boat maker working in Marylebone!!

I think you are right Arranroots - now I have more to work with I will order the Emma/Thomas certificate.  Be interesting to see what that shows! Thank you all for your help.

Hello Ladies
Thomas may be in Soho in 1871.
Cordwainer.boarder born Monmouthshire c 1842
Ancestry have him as Thos Calliggan
REF RG10 147 F 65 P27
Do you think it could be a version of Cadogan?

Rhys

That was well spotted Rhys!

It doesn't seem any LESS likely than DUGGAN LOL!

I can't really identify this fellow on the 1861 census - shame he doesn't say exactly where he was born.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Morning

Thank you Rhys. I am going to spend some time mapping all this out on paper to try to clarify who's who (my slow brain finds it easier to get all the generations in place if I see it that way!!).  Will let you know if it all becomes miraculously clear ???

Hi again

Have done well on the Fritchley side (Thomas's wife) tracing them all through to 1901 - thank you Arranroots!  I think the combination of Cadogan and Duggan is beginning to fit.  If it is the right person, then he used Duggan until he left Wales and became Cadogan (or mis-transcriptions of) in England.  Would that make sense?  The ages and occupations of all the Duggan/Cadogan combinations would fit.  Will order the marriage certificate next week and see if that throws any more light on parents/names etc.

Will let you know as soon as I do - thank you.
