« on: Saturday 04 March 06 14:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for information please about the parents and siblings of James Rossiter born circa 1818 in Weymouth.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Best wishes

Weymouth didn't have a church in 1818. How do you know it was in Weymouth - a census? The registers for Melcombe Regis and Wyke Regis, which would be where Weymouth people were baptised, have nothing.

Hi rj,

I have James in the 1851 Census living at Horsemoor Green, Langley Marish and that identifies him as being 33, a railway porter from Weymouth Dorset. He is living with his wife Harriet aged  35 from Huntsham , Devon.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes

It didn't help that he was indexed as James Raipter b Waymath, but I did find him! However, I think he is actually James Painter, not James Rossiter. It looks more like Painter in 1851, but in the following censuses (he doesn't move) it is definitely that.

Hi rj,

Thanks for that. I know in the past that the recorders  used to write Rossiter in a strange way with the "ss" being written  with what appears to be a double "f". Are you sure that the handwriting style is not a factor here please?

I am certain I'm afraid.
The 1851 entry (HO107/1718/170/17) is reasonably difficult to read; it looks much more like Painter than Rossiter but I wouldn't have gone to the stake on it.
However, in 1861 (RG9/851/83/17) James and Harriet are still in Langley Marish ; he is now a station master, she still a dressmaker; birthplaces remain the same; the name - Painter - is much clearer.
And in 1871 (RG10/1399/55/19), when they are still in Horsemore Green, L.M., with the same birthplaces, the names are very clearly James and Harriet Painter (although he is now a coal merchant!).

Hi rj,

Many thanks for looking. It looks like the person who supplied the information must have misread the census, but on the positive side it's one less "Rossiter" for me to track down. Sorry that your time has been wasted on a wild goose chase.

Have a good day.

Best wishes
