by the way, if anyone has any info on anyone on the certificate, i would be most grateful.

Stephen,

I had a look in the IGI for births of a Margaret PATERSON, parents John PATERSON and
Helen in Scotland in 1827 +/- 10 years.  The following looks very promising:
Margaret PATERSON bap 2 May 1824, Hamilton Lanarkshire, parents John PATERSON
and Helen MICHLAN.
I expect that this name would be subject to many spelling variants  :'(

JAP
PS: I note two births to Joseph and Margaret but they are of no help (i.e. no middle
name from Margaret's mother):
Edward George TARELTON (sic) b 7 Feb 1859 in Hamilton, parents Joseph Fletcher
TARELTON and Margaret PATERSON
David Maxwell TARLETON b 3 Oct 1863 in Hamilton, parents Joseph TARLETON and Margaret PATERSON

PPS: In that Hamilton batch with Margaret's baptism, there's also the baptism on
19 Aug 1821 of a Sarah PATERSON, parents John PATERSON and Helen MECKLAR.

Hi Stephen,

I agree with Jap.  Scotlands People also has Margaret Paterson born 2nd May, 1824 daughter of John Paterson and Helen Michlan or Michlen.

hi all.
thanks jap and ros.
helen michlan is the most likely out of them, i think helen mecklar would be to early for the one i am looking for.
thanks again for the info.

Hi Stephen,

But wouldn't you think that Sarah PATERSON bap 1821 (daughter of John PATERSON and Helen MECKLAR)
would be a sister of the 1824 Margaret PATERSON who was bap three years later (Margaret bap 1824,
a daughter of John PATERSON and Helen MICHLAN and probably yours)?

I suspect that MECKLAR and MICHLAN are just variant spellings of the same name.

And how else it might have been spelled in other records, or how it might have
ended up is anybody's guess.
