Did Gainsborough itself used to be inside Nottinghamshire? If so, when did it become part of Lincolnshire?

No.  Gainsborough is separated from Nottinghamshire by the River Trent and has always been in Lincolnshire.

Thanks for the information about the Nottinghamshire border.

Now looking for the birth and marriage of John Moore in the Gainsborough area. There was a John Moore baptised on 14 Oct 1781 in Treswell, Notts. The time is right and the area too-ish - Treswell is not too far south of Misterton. I wonder if this could be the right man?

Hi Simon,

My husband was born in Gainsborough and unless things were very different a couple of hundred years ago my advice would be to stick to the Nottinghamshire side of the Trent for your initial enquiries.   Even today "over the river" might as well be a different country!!

Also bear in mind that Gringley-on-the-Hill is not too far from the Notts/Yorks border at Bawtry.

Sorry I can't help further.
