Looking for Robert Gibson & family on 1861 and 1871 censuses.  On 1851 he is aged 50 widower and living in Ottringham.  Children still at home could be Joseph, George and William.  George was 7 and William 5 on 1851 census.

With many thanks.

Hi Steve

Yes, that's the family.  Looks like the children I thought might be at home aren't (apart from George) and the ones I thought might have flown the nest are still at home.

Hopefully 1871 census will let me know whether Jane left to get married or is still a spinster looking after her Dad!

With many thanks for 1861 census information.

Hi Steve

That's super - thank you very much.
Looks like Jane is going to be a spinster!!
The occupation is interesting - from cordwainer to shoemaker.  I have another Gibson ancestor who was a shoemaker but on one census only was a cordwainer.  I wonder how one occupation helps the other!!

Many many thanks for the info.

With best wishes.

Hi Zephyr - Glad to help. :D

I think a Cordwainer was a shoemaker back in the day. Have a look at the site below.

Hello Steve

Super!  Many thanks for that info.  I'd thought Cordwainer was something to do with ropes, being near the sea... boats ...  ??? ???

I've been under a misapprehension all this time... nice
to have it cleared up.  I have made a note of the web page and run a copy off to keep in my file as a note of interest.

With many many thanks.

Hi Zephyr

I wasn't quite sure what it was neither, so I just googled it and found that site which I thought looked quite useful.  :)

Best Wishes
Steve
