That is interesting Rosemary because the patterns produced by drawn thread work are very similar to those carved into leather in some cases.  Although the ones on leather are more usually akin to carving into wood.

Eureka!  I have had a reply from Lisburn Linen Museum and I quote "Veining was one aspect of embroidery in whitework.  Drawing the threads was another.  Women did both types for extremely low wages.   I suppose you were all riveted by this subject.

Hiya Rosemary,

You beat me to it. I was not happy with the thought of your grandmother working in the leather industry. There were a lot of linen factories in and around Lurgan. I sold souvenir Irish linens with machine embroidered designs but in your grandmother's day such work was all done by hand. Even today, to the best of my knowledge, the designs on more expensive cloths are still hand done. www.marlamallett.com/l-bobbin.htm

All the Best,

Chris

Hi My Great Aunt Catherine Wilson aged 21 also lived on Ann Street Lurgan and had the occupation Veiner according to the 1901 census. Do think there may be a connection here?

A belated welcome to RootsChat  :)

Just linking up your gt aunt in the 1901 census, so that others can see her occupation of veiner. Is this her? Catherine BENSON (22), Ann Street, Lurgan. Her mother is Benson and her widowed sister's name is WILSON.

Anna BENSON married James WILSON on 18th October 1886 in Lurgan.

Reply #5 has a broken link to LurganAncestry.

Here's the home page of the current site. A very good genealogy site for those with Lurgan ancestors.
