Christina Duncan and John Lawrence
« on: Tuesday 07 March 06 21:03 GMT (UK) »
Banffshire/Moray

Trying to trace John Lawrence a farm labourer of Banffshire/Moray area and his spouse, Christina and their children.

Does anyone know of Christina  Duncan who married John Lawrence in Aberlour Banffshire on 23 August 1823.

They had a daughter Ann born 24 April 1832 in Rothes who married a joiner,  John Gerrie of Keith in 1854.

They had  two sons, Alexander born 7 Sept 1829 in Rothes and his older brother James 09 March 1827

Christina/Christian Lawrence died in Fife Keith 29 March 1866.  She was at that time “above 80”.  I do not know when John died or the fate of any of their sons.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks

Have you looked in the census at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl ? Most of the county of Banff is online for 1841 and 1851. I was able to find Ann Lawrence, aged 9, in Keith in 1841, but the server crashed and I couldn't get the full household. You might be luckier.

Have you got a copy of Christina's death certificate? If not, you should get one from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It will tell you the names of her parents and whether or not she was a widow, and hence whether John predeceased her.

You could try the Moray index at http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp - the just might be something about the sons there.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Dear Forfarian

Thanks for the heads up on the census...other suggested paths I had trod, eg death cert.   John did leave her a widow.

Many times have silently  thanked the good ratepayers of Moray for supporting such an ab fab search facility.   But I will go back and do as sugggested and look for some of the sons there.

But your  census suggestion has borne some fruit for me.   So again, many kind thanks for your time and trouble.
