Can anybody help me identify the following:
Elizabeth Wyllie was born around 1824 and died August 1878 in Humbie. Her parents were John Wyllie (blacksmith) and Jane (maiden surname unknown).

I am unable to find anything on the IGI or Scotlandspeople - any help would be appreciated - many thanks - Keira

Hello Keira welcome to the wonderful world of RootsChat.

You appear quite definite about your spelling of both Elizabeth and Wyllie ! Don't be.  Scotlandspeople accepts only the spelling they have recorded and back in the early 1800's spelling didn't matter much.
Have you tried variants on the spelling - both fore and sur names?
Elizabeth was often recorded as Elisabeth for example.
Wyllie could be Wylie, Willey, Whiley, willie and there are probably a few more which seem now quite ridiculous.
Make a list of all the varations you can think of before you start searching then use wildcards (*) in place of some of the variable letters and you might have some success.
Once you get the hang of it you will probably go back and re-try some of your other no-hope searches.

Good luck

Hi keira,

I found a Wylie family also living in Humbie just slightly after the dates you gave.

They are:

John Wylie and his wife Margaret Stenhouse. According to the British Vital Records they had 3 children, all born in Humbie . . . (no sign of an Elizabeth though)

The children were:

John, Birth Date: 25 Jul 1835. Christening Date: 10 Aug 1835
Recorded in: Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland

William, Birth Date: 17 Oct 1846, Christening Date: 22 Nov 1846
Recorded in: Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland

Jean, Birth Date: 17 Nov 1849, Christening Date: 16 Dec 1849
Recorded in: Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland.

Anne

Anne - thank you very much for this information - as I am reasonably inexperienced in this so it's good to know that there are people who know what they are doing.  I'll try the things out that you advise - many thanks again - Keira
