COMPLETED- Derrymeale
« on: Wednesday 08 March 06 16:51 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody know where this is? Is it in Co Down?

COUNTY DOWN ASSIZES
Party Work-Cause and Cross Cause
Henry MAGILL, Andrew MAGILL, and James MILLIKEN, were indicted for a Riot
and Assault at Derrymeale, on the 24th July 1823, upon John WHARRERY, Nicholas
MAGUIRE, James HAROLD, Hugh MORGAN, William FORSYTHE, and Hugh BURNS; and
the latter parties were also indicted for a Riot and Assault at the same time and place.
Several witnesses were examined. It was stated by one Witness, James BELL,
"there were five attacks and repulses; the battle lasted an hour and three
quarters; the battle was about Religion and Party business."
The Learned Judge charged the Jury in a luminous and impartial manner,
reprobating, in strong terms, the disgraceful fact, which was admitted on
all hands, that a large band of Orangemen should be suffered to parade at a
funeral, and with guns, and headed by fifes and drums, and all the material
of Civil War.

Hello Gary,

Derrymeale is not shown in http://www.thecore.com/seanruad I note the article was published in the Connaught Journal and wonder if that paper spelt the place name incorrectly. There is a place in Co. Down called Derryneill http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/PLACENAMES/D.htm#De Broken link

All the Best,

Christopher

Hi Christopher

I think you have come up with the answer.  I checked out Derryneil on the map, it is in the right sort of location and there is even a little church in the townland.
Now is that "my" James Milliken or another cousin?
Which side was he on? Was he with the Orange band or attending the funeral?

Probably never know but it is a nice story to have in the background of my researching.  Maybe I have to find out who the Magill's were before that puzzle will be solved.

Thank you for the suggestion.
