My gg grandfather b 1818 in Haddington, Scotland, was the first Safety-valve Inspector for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. On most censuses he is shown as an Engine Fitter. I wondered if his father, Robert, bc1790 was also involved in the early railways in Scotland?
