Hi Sarah,

Here's another William Handyside!

This grave is in Larbert Cemetery, Stirlingshire and the insciption is as follows:

Left panel:
Sacred to he memory of Elinor Campbell Hodge who died 24th April 1932 aged 82 years
For many years faithful friend and nurse to the family of the late Hugh Handyside.

Centre panel:
In memory of Hugh Handyside son of the late William Handyside of Cornhill, Lanarkshire,
For many years resident in New Zealand and latterly of Magdala Crescent, Edinburgh.
Born at Oggs Castle, Lanarkshire, 31st March 1844 died at Edinburgh 3rd March 1930.

Right panel:
Also in loving memory of Hugh Skinner Stewart Handyside his only  son who died 21st April 1933 aged 37 years.

A relation to 'your' William Handyside perhaps?

Anne

Hi Ann
I can't see a connection at the moment but will keep it in mind. The wierd thing is that I have a Hugh Skinner on my mothers side from Ross & Cromarty b 1837. The only Hugh Handyside I have is son of Robert b 1801Canongate Parish, Edinburgh. Thanks anyway
Sarah

Hi I am a Handyside - family originating from the Newcastle UK area.  I am trying to track down my line of Handyside family and have done some research.  I have accurate names (from my grandfather's birth certificate) and what I believe to be fairly accurate birth and death dates of my Great Grandparents - George Edward Handyside and Elizabeth Jane Somerville.  I believe his father was a Cuthbert Handyside who was married to Jane Ann Reay - although I am not firm on this.  I will be travelling to the UK to see my grandfather and quiz him on what he knows but was wondering if you happen to have any leads.  Do our paths cross?

Hi rdhgordie
I don't think we have a connection as far as I know. Our connection to Newcastle seems to be through William's wife Mary Routledge.  In the 1851 census she was working and living with a family in Rye Hill, Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne. At the same time William was a Journeyman Gardner at The Hirsal, Coldstream, Berwickshire. That is further north up the East coast than Newcastle.
William was born in Fountain Bridge, Edinburgh in 1827. Mary was born Farman, Nr Brampton, Cumberland in 1829. How Mary ended up in Newcastle I have no idea or how/where they met!. By the time of the marriage William had moved south and came back to Newcastle to be married by special licence. The 1st child (William James) was born in Bernet, Middlesex. The 2nd ( Mary) was born back up in Northumberland  in Newham,. Children 3 & 4 ( Jessie & Margaret Emma) were born in North Mimms in Hertfordshire at Mimwood Lodge. Children 5,6 & 7 ( John, Elizabeth & Hyslop) were all born at Buile Hill, Seedley, Lancashire
I am the great grand child of Jessie.
I know there were/are groups of Handysides both in the Edinburgh area and Newcastle area and have often wondered if my William had relatives in the area and so came to meet Mary. I guess we will never know.
I hope you enjoy your trip and Happy Hunting.

HI rdhgeordie,
read your letter with interest. I too am a Handyside of Newcastle. My GG Grandfather was Robert Handyside born 1826 in Stamfordham Northumberland. The names you have mentioned are also my ancestors. I will try and sort them out and get back to you. It will take some time as they were a huge family, but a very interesting one.

Regards
irene h

Thanks for the reply!  I have just come back from Newcastle yesterday and was looking into some family history - I am VERY interested in seeing what you have.  You can e-mail me direct at (*) if that is easier.  Thanks again.

HI RDH Geordie,
New to this website so not sure if you received my last message.
I will try again.
Cuthbert Handyside was my GGgrandfather's brother.born 1823 Stamfordham Northumberland.
Ann Handyside born 1831 Stamfordham Nthbld was also my GGGrandfathers sister, she married a Joseph Sommerville b.1828 in Stamfordham in 1852. I only have a son born to them in1854,Joseph. Does this match up to your records?
