Hi,

Just checked 1841 for coldstream and there is no sign of the family. I took a look at the 1851 and I see they have a child who was 11 born in Hariot and one 9 born in Stow. I took a look on freecen and the family are there in Stow.

Hope this helps,
Emma

Sorry not to have replied before now. Many thanks for your efforts but that is not "my" William. If you search on Handyside and have a look on "1851 census look up please"  you will see all the info I have on him. It's about the 5th posting down.
Thanks again

If you look at the post noted below I have written all I know of William. I might add that I have  Parents (John H b 1803)and Mary Pollock, Grand parents Robert H (b 1774 Inveresk)and Mary Thomson and great grand parents Robert H and Marion Scott
see Rootschat search .... Handyside...... scroll down to "1851 census look up please" then scroll to 5th post...... This saves me writing it all out again, sorry to be lazy but there is quite a lot.
Many thanks

Hi Sarah

Just a few more ideas to add to your pile! There is a freecen 1841 entry in Lasswade, Midlothian:

HANDISIDE Mary, age 40
HANDISIDE Jennet, age 15, Paper Maker
HANDISIDE William, age 12
BROWN James, age 21, Paper Maker
BROWN Agnes, age 6

All showing as born Midlothian.

The marriage of John Handyman and Mary Pollock shows on IGI as on 5 Jan 1823 in St Cuthbert's so there may well have been other children born before William in 1827.

Regards.

Thanks. Just had a quick look for this Jennet on the IGI with no success. Thought it might give me her fathers name! Ah well.

Hi Sarah

I think the Janet showing on the 1841 census index may well be William's sister. I had a look on IGI and a Janet Handyman married a John Thomson on 22 Dec 1846 in Penicuik, Midlolthian.  This Janet died young in 1862 in Canongate, Edinburgh. Her parents are showing both as deceased, John Handyside, a mason, and Janet (I know you have Mary but I wonder if this is an error by husband when reporting death?) Pollock.  I suppose a look at the 1851/61 censuses will help to see their choice of names for their children. There are only two children showing on IGI post 1855 and official registration.

Regards.
