A mystery Chapel!
« on: Friday 10 March 06 13:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi again all!
Hope you are not getting annoyed with me asking so many questions :) this is the first site I have found that people actually get back to you about queries!
I have a distant ancestor called William SYKES (which is a man i cannot find at the moment!) and he was born in a place called Ron Chapel (so another distant new found relative says!)
Apparently there was a well known chapel in Bradford called Iron Chapel.
Anyone ever heard of it? I have been unable to find any information on it at all!
How very frustrating!
Any ideas welcome, the madder the better :) !!
WALTON line from Yorkshire is my main interest.
WOOD, TYERMAN, WALKER, HAWE.
Any information on Fryston Colliery and that particular area would also be gratefully received!
William SYKES is also a great interest of mine because i cant seem to find him! Born c.1840 "Iron Chapel" Bradford.
Thanks!!!

When was this chap born?

Is his place of birth (on census?) always this Iron/Ron Chapel?

If you look on

http://npor.emma.cam.ac.uk/Reporter/jan86/b186.htm

there is mention of Eastbrook Chapel, Bradford being of cast iron construction - maybe it was known locally as "Iron Chapel"

Good luck

And the answer to the other question?
We' need as much as possible to give context.

Apologies for the late reply!

On his census it says Iron Chapel. Sorry I don't have any more info, I've never seen the census records it was a long distant new found relation of mine that has given me this info!

Thanks!

How many census(es) do you have him on?

1881 should be about the fifth one he appears on.

PUT the 1881 on IN FULL WITH HOUSEHOLD  if you do not have the others, and an attempt to trace hiom on other returns can be made.

In the 1881 census William is living in Altofts. I have a feeling he is on another census too but as I haven't the information with me, I would hasten to guess which one it is!

There is a William Sykes, a widower aged 31, miner, who was born in Bon Chapel, Yorkshire living in Altofts in 1871.

RG10/4617/99/10

In 1881 his birth place is given as Midbertown, Yorkshire - that's what the image looks like.  RG11/4573/120/65
