Poole surname
« on: Friday 10 March 06 19:40 GMT (UK) »
My GGGGrandmother was born Hannah Poole in 1811 in Rushton.  She married Jonathan Frodsham and she died in 1871 in Congleton.  Can anyone provide any more info for me, like her parents or siblings.  I have info of her during her marriage to Jonathan.
Thanks

Hi, have also found these on the 1851 census, interestingly also in Spragg Street in Congleton. Hannah Poole, widow, head, 70 born Rushton, M Poole, 30,daughter, born Rushton, silk piecer, R Poole, daughter, 28 born Rushton, silk piecer and W Poole, grandson,4, born Congleton, scholar. The first three in the household are also listed as being blind, deaf or dumb.

Thankyou Anna.  I'm unclear why Hannah was listed as a widow in 1851 as her husband, Jonathan didnt die until 1864.  I'm unsure this is the right Hannah as she wouldve been listed as Hannah Frodsham, her married name, rather than Poole, her maiden name.  However, Spragg street is right.  :-\

1851 census HO107 2167 folio 281
Spragg Street Congleton  Cheshire
Hannah Frodsam 40  Rushton, Staffordshire,  Head  Married Parish Relief
H Frodsam 16  Buglawton, Cheshire, Son Silk piecer
J Frodsam 14  Buglawton, Cheshire, Son  Silk piecer
M Frodsam 12  Buglawton, Cheshire,  Daughter  Silk piecer
F Frodsam 10  Buglawton, Cheshire, Son  Silk piecer
E Frodsam 8  Buglawton, Cheshire,  Daughter
E F Frodsham 6 Buglawton, Cheshire, Daughter
W F Frodsham 4 Buglawton, Cheshire, Son

Jonathan was not with his family in 1861 when Hannah was still describing herself as married and still living in Spragg Street.

1861 census RG9 2632 folio 49
Cheshire County Lunatic Asylum Upton by Chester  Cheshire
Jonathan Frodsham 50  Bunbury, Cheshire, Patient  Married Shoemaker

On the 1851 census many patients were only enumerated by their intials which would make finding Jonathan more tricky.

Asylum records are very detailed and informative

You can access Jonathan's records at Cheshire Record Office. Remember in those days mental illness was little understood and often confused with physical illness. Patients with TB could end up in asylums and certainly those who suffered from epilepsy.

Thanks Valda.  I suspect that Jonathan may have been there duirng the 1851 census, but unable to prove that yet.  Jonathan's granddaughter, Martha, also died in an asylum, aged 13 from something called meningitis (convulsions) tuberculosis.  Also on her death certificate, it looks like Middlesons disease, but have found no such thing.  Anyway, I know what you mean about illnesses being confused.

Jonathan's case book records and the asylum entry and discharge books will tell you precisely when and where he was. If he came from another asylum or the workhouse the asylum records will state that. The records will also give you his date and cause of death. The case books will also give you some background to his illness though largely they usually will be guessing the cause of his illness.

Hi , TrueBlueAngel, the Hannah I mentioned on the 1851 is what looks like maybe Hannah Frodsham's mother.

Anna, that sounds about right.  My Hannah married Jonathan in 1831.  And I know they were both together in the 1841 census.  I wonder if it is the same house in Spragg street  :-\
