The Cambs FHS web site has the indexes to the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html

If you then find who you are looking for and need more info from the census itself you can quote the film and folio numbers which makes look ups much quicker.

Your William age 25 and Samuel age 5 plus Jane 25 were in Gt Eversden in 1841. William was an ag lab and all 3 were born in county.

In 1851 they have been transcribed as Cato!

Novice question,,,, How do you know there wasn't actually a Samuel Cato and this isn't Samuel Cater? Do you get to a point and then take an educated guess? Just curious how to deal with misspellings...

And by the way, whats a AG LAB? Thanks!!

Agricultural labourer.

I think the chances of two families in the same village with the same christian names and ages, one named Cato and the other Cater are pretty remote! It's down to the balance of probabilities, plus putting yourself in the position of the transcriber/enumerator - with illiterate informants he wrote down what he thought he heard! You live in NY - how would you write down "water" as spoken by a NYer? wadder or wodder? One "d" or two?

The comparison 1841 to any other census is the most difficult as other confirmatory points are missing eg actual age rather than rounding down, relationship to head, and place of birth. Comparing 1851 to 1861 is much easier.

Do you use the LDS opposite Lincoln Centre? I used to do a lot of my research there, before I returned to London.

regards

david

Hi again David,, I haven't been to that LDS actually, there is a small one near me in Queens, but , most of my research has been done in country or on the net....... I took another look at 1851 and there was also an ANN "Cato" age 73.. I assumed that was WIlliam Cater's mother,, so then I looked at the baptismal index for 1813 and WIlliam born to a John and Ann Cater at Great Eversden., Pretty haddy that link you gave THANKS!

I know there was a lot of infant death but its odd that there was a 13 year gap between Samuel and Henry.

I guess I'll have to wait for my next trip to england to check wedding and baptismal records for John and Ann, but if you have access to the 1861 or 1871 census could I bother you to look up the family again? By 1881 Samuel was already in Islington...

Regards
David
