1841 Census Look-up BOWERS Snelson
« on: Sunday 12 March 06 14:52 GMT (UK) »
Would appreciate help finding the following, listed in the 1851 census as living at 20, Carter Lane, Snelson

Head - Joseph Bowers bc 1783, Over Peover
Wife - Jane bc 1792, Marthall
Grand Daughter - Jane bc 1839, Over Peover

Gd Jane's father is listed on her marriage certificate as William Earlam but I can find no trace of him or Jane's mother.

Many thanks in advance
Andy

I am just wondering if this could be Jane's baptism at Over Peover.
Born 16 Dec 1838 and baptised 3 Mar 1839 Jane dr. of William and Anne Erlam, Manchester, Labourer.
For sometime now I have been interested in finding more on William and Anne, as there is a theory (and nothing proved) that William and Anne may have been on a visit to other Earlams in Snelson (Enoch and family) when Jane was born or baptised.
There are other children born to William and Ann(e) and baptised at Manchester Cathedral, including one named Enoch.   You might like to visit the Earlam Family History Website at www.earlamfamilyhistory.com where you will find listings from Parish Registers.
At the time of her marriage was Jane known as Jane Bowers or Jane Earlam?
Looking forward to hearing from you
Joyce

What was William Earlam's occupation?   i.e. Jane's father, as per her marriage certificate.  It might help me to pinpoint exactly who he was.

I have just taken a look at the 1841 Census and also in the same household as Jane Bowers 43 and Jane Bowers 2 - just above these names are William Erlam(??) Ann Erlam(24) and George Erlam (1).  They are all at 1 Meredith's Court, Hulme.
I believe that Jane Bowers (43) is Jane's grandmother.    You will find that a Joseph Bowers is in Peover Superior with Amelia Bowers who would appear to be his daughter (judging by age).

Me again!
I think I have solved the situation with regard to Jane Bowers or Erlam (Earlam or Irlam).
Unfortunately the spelling of the Earlam name keeps changing (nothing unusual in this).
William Irlam married Ann Bowers on 10 February 1839 at Manchester Cathedral, therefore Jane who was born on 16 Dec. 1838 was born prior to their marriage and therefore as Jane Bowers.   However she was baptised on 3 March 1839, after her parents married, and was recorded in Over Peover records as Jane Erlam.
In fact in 1841 Census Jane is in the same household as her father and mother and also her grandmother and brother George.

If anyone should get a copy of the marriage cert. for William Irlam and Ann Bowers can you please let me know who his father was.   I would be very interested in having this information.   I would also like to know more about Jane's descendants.

First of all - many, many thanks for this information!

The visit to Earlams in Snelson theory would hold even more if as suspected, Ann is a Bowers and her parents also lived in Snelson at the time, which they appear to do!

William Earlam is listed on Jane Bowers' marriage certificate as a labourer which fits!

What information do you want about Jane's descendants?  I'm more than happy to share - she is my gg grandmother - so I have lots!!

Cheers
Andy
