Baptist chapel
« on: Monday 13 March 06 17:02 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any knowledge of a Baptist chapel in Pwllglas?

I've looked through loads of stuff on the internet and can find no mention of one.
When i was last in Pwllglas 10/11 years ago i actually went inside the place but of course at that time i hadn't yet started any research and took very little notice of what it was called or indeed the street name. ::) I'm interested because apparently my Taid was a deacon there. He and my Nain are buried there also.
I paid a visit to my local Baptist minister yesterday and posed the same question but when he looked in his church directory he could find nothing about it. He gave me a website to look at, the Baptist Union  in Swansea but still nothing. Am beginning to think it was a mirage ???
I believe a lot of chapels/churches have been closed over the years but if anyone has any ideas ???

Poli,

Do you have a marriage certificate for your Nain and Taid? if so, it might have the name of the chapel or the strand of baptists they belonged to. For instance, my gg grandparents were Particular Baptists, which made it easier to find out where the chapel was.

Best wishes,

Yes RuthieB i have got their wedding cert, which states that they were married in a register office in the district of Ruthin. Odd this because my mother always told me that her parents were very much 'churchy' people.
However, my local Baptist minister said that it is possible that the church they usually attended wasn't licenced for marriages.

The chapel/church i'm looking for though, was just  across the road from the house where they lived in Pwllglas quite a long while after their marriage. Although i visited the house as a child i can't remember an address and even when i returned to Pwllglas 10 years ago i can only remember the chapel itself and not the house. [ i do recall the house was on a corner of 2 roads or lanes as they were years ago.]I must have been having one of my earliest 'senior moments' i think!!!

I remember that the area had changed a lot since my childhood. Lanes had changed into roads and everywhere seemed more built up and less countrified somehow. :'( :'( :'( Poli.

I now have to own up to a large error--- it's not Baptist-- it's Methodist!!!

I dug out a couple of Hymn books of my Nain and there in large letters on the cover were , yes, you've guessed it ---Methodist---.
I had assumed that as i was married in a Baptist church and also my parents, it seemed logical that it ran in the family, obviously not. Valuable lesson here Poli, DON'T assume anything!!!  ::) ::) ::)

Hi,
There is one Church in Efenechtyd, a little way out of Pwllglas down a very narrow windy road! and a Methodist Chapel, Rhiw Chapel where my ancestors apparently worshipped also in Pwllglas. My family own the Fox and Hounds Inn in Pwllglas, the Chapel is on that side of the road about quarter to half a mile as if you're going to Ruthin, sorry don't know the road name. It's a nice little Chapel. There are other Chapels in the vicinity though if none of these ring true for you.

Thanks for the reply Nerys, only just read your post as i've been on holiday.

Since i first asked about the Chapel in March 2006 i have been able to visit Pwllglas in Sept 2006 for a few days.
The B&B couple where i stayed were very kind and arranged for me to go inside Rhiw Chapel and i saw the grave of my Nain & Taid and aunt Lizzie in the cemetery behind the Chapel once again after 11 years.
